Confirmation
We human beings mark and celebrate the most important events of our lives with rituals. Confirmation is the ritual in which we celebrate and affirm our Christian life in the rich tradition of the Episcopal Church. It takes place during St. Stephen's annual visit from one of our bishops, usually in the spring. Adults prepare for Confirmation, Reception or Reaffirmation in the Inquirers Class. Youth in 9th grade (or above) prepare for Confirmation through a program described here.
Confirmation
Confirmation typically is offered once a year, when one of our bishops visits the parish. It is for people who were either baptized as children or who are coming to the Episcopal Church from another tradition. Confirmation is preceded by a period of instruction and inquiry (adults take part in an inquirers class (which will take on a different form this fall), while youth are prepared by staff and volunteers in our youth ministry program). In the ritual of confirmation, a person makes a mature affirmation of the promises made by his or her parents and godparents at baptism, and joins the fellowship of Christians who worship and serve in the Anglican tradition. Since the confirmed person has received instruction, he or she is ready to vote in parish elections wherever he or she is a member, and to serve in elected positions there.
Reception
Reception is for those who have already been confirmed in another denomination and wish to affirm their choice to continue their spiritual journey as an Episcopalian.
Reaffirmation
Some who are already confirmed Episcopalians may wish to be "reaffirmed" by the bishop when he or she visits St. Stephen's. Often this will occur after a period of study, reflection and prayer. It may take place as a result of having accompanied a teenage child, or a spouse, or other loved one during their own preparation for confirmation.
Membership
Anyone who is a baptized Christian, from any denomination, may be considered a member of St. Stephen's simply by telling us that you would like to join our fellowship. You maintain your membership by joining us in regular prayer and service, and by receiving Holy Communion, the mystical sacrament of Christ’s body and blood that opens us more completely to God’s presence and unites us to all human beings. Confirmation (or reception, if appropriate) provides a way to affirm our faith publicly and assists in guiding our fellowship in the Way of Christ.
