Art at St. Stephen’s

The arts can be a path to God. We offer music in a wide variety of forms, in worship and in concert, as you’ll see on the Music page.
We also value the visual arts, and offer avenues for those who create it and those who appreciate it.

 

 

 

Art Exhibits

Parishioners and others with a connection to St. Stephen’s Church exhibit their art in one of two spaces: a small gallery off the large fellowship hall, and in the Café @ St. Stephen’s. Information about upcoming exhibitors is published in the Spirit and eSpirit, our weekly periodicals. Stop by these gallery spaces to take in the current exhibits and read more about the artists. Some pieces are available for purchase, with a percentage of the proceeds donated to the church.

Stations of the Cross

On Good Friday, following a noon service called the Liturgy for Good Friday, we set up Stations of the Cross in designed to help the faithful follow in our Lord’s footsteps on his journey to Calvary. The stations consist of a series of paintings by Laura James, whose work is influenced by Ethiopian iconography. Each painting corresponds to one of 14 stations on Jesus’ path to the cross. Participants may walk the stations in silence, or join a group to say prayers at each station.

Icon Writing

We offer an annual workshop in the summer led by a renowned iconographer, Suzanne Jones Schleck. It fills up very quickly, so be sure to keep track of sign-up dates. This week-long offering is suitable for beginners as well as experienced icon writers. Artistic skill is not a prerequisite. The 2024 workshop is full, but you can sign up to receive an email alert when it’s time to sign up for the 2025 offering.

Some workshop participants, particularly those who are local, like to gather at St. Stephen’s at other times of year to work on icons.
