About Monica
Monica Vega is a vocational missionary who has served with fellow missionary Heidi Schmidt since 1995, with ministries in Nairobi, Kenya; six years in Mthatha, South Africa with African Medical Mission in a rural orthopedic hospital and nursing clinic; and the Isibindi program in the Diocese of Grahamstown in South Africa. This was a response to the overwhelming number of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. In Grahamstown, they developed the Isibindi model of care and by the time they completed their time there, they had developed and coordinated five Isibindi programs and seven “Safe Parks” in the Eastern Cape, serving over 5000 children and training over 50 child and youth care community workers. For the past eight years she and Heidi have been in rural Jujuy, Argentina, responding with the local diocese to the problem of drug and alcohol addiction in youth, and violence against women and children using the Project Guadalupe Model of Care.
