Advent and Christmas at St. Stephen’s
Some of the most beloved and meaningful traditions of the church year take place during the seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. Here are the dates, times and other details of special events, concerts, worship and more.
Daily Advent meditations
Subscribe to receive daily emails featuring seasonal reflections by parishioners, staff, and clergy. If you received these meditations last year during Advent, you do not need to sign up again. If you did not receive them (or you’re not sure), subscribe here. As with all our emails, these are available to all (you do not have to be a St. Stephen’s parishioner), they are free, and we will not share your email address with any outside party. (Did you miss some of the reflections that have been sent so far? Visit this page.)
Advent Fair | Sunday, December 1 | 10-11:15 a.m.
An annual intergenerational event in the fellowship hall; no sign-up is needed. Enjoy fellowship, refreshments, and pick up free Advent resources and activities to use at home. Advent wreath kits will be available for $20 (wreath form, candles, candle holders). If you would like to make your wreath on-site, we will have fresh greenery to use. If you can bring some greenery from home to share with others, please do! No sign-up is needed for the fair, but we ask adults and youth to participate in planning, set-up, refreshments, and assisting younger children during the fair. Volunteer sign-up is here.

The May Fair House will also be open for shopping that evening. Admission is free.
Winter Solstice concert | Wednesday, December 18 | 7 p.m.
Pause during the busy holiday season and enjoy classic and modern a cappella choral music reflecting on themes of waning darkness and night, increasing light and day, and our preparation for the Nativity in our hearts and lives. Sanctuary, the Compline choir, will also be joined by cellist Peter Greydanus and harpist Anastasia Jellison, performing both with the choir and on their own as a harp and cello duo. Reserve your place ($20; students $10) here, or call 804.288.2867. No paper tickets will be issued; you may present your email receipt at the door.

This annual tradition for St. Stephen’s youth in grades 6-12 takes place on the Fourth Sunday of Advent as part of the 11:15 a.m. service. In order to participate in the pageant, youth must attend a on Saturday, December 21, from 1 to 3 p.m.
This year, we are thrilled to invite current kindergarteners to join the pageant costumed as animals in the final Nativity scene.
