World War II Memoirs:
Personal Stories of the Greatest Generation

More than 20 years ago, St. Stephen’s parishioner and staff member Lyn Presson began collecting memories of World War II from parishioners who had served during the war in the armed forces or in other roles. Soon after retirement, Lyn enlisted help from parishioner Nancy Emerson, a professional editor. Some veterans were eager to tell their stories, while others required a bit of coaxing, but over the years they and their family members shared recollections, photos, and mementoes for this project. In 2025, Nancy completed her work and provided all the materials to the parish communications office for production, design, and publication.

The book is a fitting tribute and expression of gratitude for the service provided by these faithful men and women. One of the motivations for compiling these amazing accounts was the knowledge that members of the “Greatest Generation” would eventually be known only through the stories, photos, and clippings they left behind. World War II Memoirs will make cherished gifts, and we are glad that they will be available before Veterans Day or for holiday gift-giving. It seems especially appropriate that the sacrifices made by so many to ensure freedom are being published during the 250th anniversary year of the Declaration of Independence.

Production costs for the hardbound book are being covered by the sales price ($40 per copy), as well as generous donations from several members of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, including those who made donations to the Women of St. Stephen’s in memory of Sara Frances Derieux. Copies will be available for pre-orders beginning Sunday, September 13, with sample copies on hand. Several pages of the 92-page book are also available here.

Pre-payment is required and may be made by card or ACH using this order form. Paper forms will be available September 13 for those unable to make online payments and paying for their orders by check.
